West Asheville consists of a series of neighborhoods with a 'funky-trendy' common vibe that translates into a mix of historic neighborhoods and fun main streets with great places to eat and of course real 'pubs' in which to drink.West Asheville is in the midst of rejuvenation with many stores and mixed use ventures being built.
West Asheville is similar to many districts in US cities where one will find an area that was built in a previous heyday and lost some of its sparkle over time to suburbs or other areas. There are many studies on the rejuvenation of city historic districts all over the country. The less cash coming into the area in turn led to the historic homes and fixtures and features in them not being stripped out, as happened in many sought after neighborhoods in the 60s,70s and 80s. Now, many of the intact areas are making a big comeback as interest grows.
Sellers say:
"West Asheville is great. Safe, fun and wholesome. Great pubs, restaurants and farmers markets. And it's a place that's changing -- so many cool older houses have been (and continue to be) snatched up and renovated.
Sunny Point (simply amazing and award winning food) and the U-Joint (great beer selection and incredible gourmet burgers!)
Ingles is close (for basics), Grove Corner Market (for some really interesting local groceries) and EarthFare (a large "Healthy" food store).
What we love about the house - the balance of the design. The entry is dramatic -- looking through the entire center core of the house -- living room through to the back windows of the dining room. Then the bedroom / bath wings on either side of that -- like I said, it's balanced. We were also drawn to the fact this house had a completely open basement, which we converted into a really "hip" second living space. Doing that has helped with the mortgage, and gives the opportunity of housing aging parents or guests in a close but separate (and really nice, open) space.
….. Because it's close to downtown but not IN downtown. A lot of young families have migrated to West Asheville and have rolled up their sleeves and renovated their homes, making it a fun place to hang out and get to know people. I don't know about schools. When we bought the house, all our kids were out of school except the youngest, who attends AB Tech and that's been nice because it's an easy trek for her from the house to the school.
We've renovated and more than doubled the usable square footage of the house, keeping the '30's charm of the upstairs and creating a cool, modern living space downstairs (with recessed lighting, open floor plan). And if you like gardening, I've gone with a French model for the front yard, combining lots of vegetables and flowers and vines (butterflies love it!).
What we love about the area - Hiking, hiking and hiking! We have discovered our home is designed for entertaining -- nice large kitchen, dining room and living room. And we've taken advantage of that several times -- having block parties in our home and front yard (great way to get to know the neighbors). "

Located in beautiful Asheville, serves what they like to describe as Italian-American "soul food," the legacy of generations of Italian cooks in American kitchens. The words "Nona Mia" are Italian for "my grandmother"; and the name honors the traditions passed down to chef Peter Affatato by his own grandmother, his other relatives, and the entire Italian-American community in this country. Peter's dishes are faithful, yet modern recreations of the culinary wisdom deriving from two great traditions.
