The things we love about Hendersonville are the small town feel that it has along with being near larger stores.  There is an Apple Festival here in September that is a lot of fun because local artists have their items for sale along with great apple products.

Some of the restaurants in our area that we like to eat at include Fireside which is like eating home cooked food.  Other ones are Fatz, O'Charley's, and Applebee's.  We even have any fast food restaurant you can think of.  In downtown Hendersonville there is a great small town place called Mike's on Main and it is like stepping back in time to an old fashioned drug store.  There is also a great coffee shop downtown called The Black Bear.  There are even a few local wineries near here.

Grocery stores are plentiful here from everything from Wal-Mart and Sams to Hendersonville Co-Op which is a natural foods store.  Ingles is a local store that buys produce locally.  Bi-Lo gives gas discounts based on the amount you spend there.  We have Harris-Teeter and Fresh Market which are more upscale stores that when I am looking for something different I can usually find it in one of those stores.

When we bought the property we were drawn to the fact that it is a fair sized corner lot that is fairly level.  It is off the beaten path in a small friendly neighborhood with woods behind that every once in a while we see deer come out of.

The Hendersonville area is wonderful because it is a small town that has many activities that go on year round.  The local parks have fireworks on the 4th.  There are local parades for holidays.

Another thing that I can mention about the Hendersonville area is there are great schools near here.  Sugarloaf Elementary is just around the corner; Apple Valley Middle School and North Hendersonville High School are right next to each other.  One thing that North Hendersonville High School does every year is it hosts its own Relay For Life Event on a Friday evening in May.

We love to go to Flat Rock Playhouse, which is nearby.  We also enjoy going to movie theaters in Hendersonville.  There are several camps in our are that have many events during the summer that families can get involved in.  We joined the Lelia Patterson Center with is a fitness, aquatics and more center.

We know everyone has different hobbies and interests.  Some of the things we enjoy are visiting the two local parks that have trails we can walk.  When we want to visit a larger park we do not have to travel very far to see beautiful waterfalls.  Hendersonville even has its own Symphony that we enjoy going to hear.  We enjoy poking in antique stores, of which Hendersonville has several.

Our neighborhood is great for both families and couples, because it is away from busy streets.  It is a quiet neighborhood and everyone here is friendly and we all enjoy getting to know each other.

We are very pleased with our average Duke Energy electric bill, which is $70.00 a month.

96 Retta Lane, Leicester, NC 28747

96 Retta Lane, Leicester NC 28747

3 Bedrooms | MLS #: 524232
Property Description
Priced Below Appraisal!!  Very unique home with stunning views. There is nothing like it on the market right now. Converted log cabin with lots of square footage and a little over 8 acres! You can see Mt. Mitchell from your back deck. Wrap around deck to maximize the views! Very neat wood pass through next to stone fireplace. Quiet and private with views of the buffalo roaming close by. Great sunny garden space and mature fruit trees.

"Seller Says"
What I love about Leicester begins with the view.  From our rear deck we can see Mount Mitchell, tallest peak east of the Mississippi, and all the magnificent scenery in between.  A second lovable feature of this section of Leicester is that our neighbor raises American bison.  Few people nowadays can enjoy living and observing “where the Buffalo roam".  While the town maintains an atmosphere of being in the country, with relatively close to shopping and business areas and are only about a 20 min. drive from the center of Asheville.

Greater Asheville has as wide a variety of restaurants as one could ask for, from fast food to good quality inexpensive to high quality expensive, to say nothing of specialty experiences too numerous to elaborate.  Our favorites include Shogun Buffet with oriental cuisine, Red Lobster, Olive Garden, TCBY/Subway with both soft serve and hand dipped frozen yogurt (located in Weaverville, roughly a 30 minute drive ).  We also enjoy Sonic Drive in with old-fashioned service on roller skates to your car.

Grocery stores abound, several within a 10-minute drive.  We like Ingles Market, and frequent two well-stocked health food stores:  Earth Fare and Green Life.

When we bought the property, we told our friends back in Massachusetts,  “The scenery is so spectacular that the owners were willing to sell us the view, and then threw in the house for free.  And we got a bargain at that.”  The house was built by a contractor for his son, and we could see that the workmanship was high quality:  both rustic and comfortable, both highly desirable features for our tastes.  The fact that it was in the country, away from the hustle and bustle of a city location, yet access to enjoyable urban features were very accessible

Asheville has been listed as one of the top 10 cities in America to live in, and we agree wholeheartedly. Unlike many small to mid-sized cities it is far from provincial, but is quite cosmopolitan with a variety of social, historic, and artistic settings and exemplifies the whole range of possible activities from ultra-conservative to far liberal and beyond.  The variety appeals to us. Whatever one’s orientation, there is a place of comfort somewhere in or near Asheville.

Not having any children at home, we have paid little attention to pre, primary, or secondary facilities, and their excellence or lack thereof.  I do believe that the local school system is at the very least good, and perhaps better than that.  I do know that there are numerous private schools, some of which are very good.  We also are blessed with a number of colleges:  community, state and private.  One could get a very good education in almost any field and never have to drive more than half-an-hour from Retta Lane.

Being in our mid-70’s, we have tended to focus on health and exercise issues.  We have been active in the Senior Games opportunities, and have participated often in various road races in the area.  As with so much else, there exists a variety of options.  We are also blessed with excellent health facilities, ranging from traditional medical facilities to numerous alternative medicine programs which include high quality professionals and practitioners.

Some of the things I love about Old Fort are its warm and friendly neighbors, beautiful views of countryside and mountains, and easy access to both city and country in a snap. My Organic Farming neighbors sell fresh eggs, meats, vegetables and flowers within a mile from my house! I love to watch the horses roam and play in the fields surrounding my house.

We love to eat, relax, and listen to music on the outdoor stage at the Straightaway Cafe just 5 minutes up the road. Custer's Last Stand in Old Fort has the best cheese steaks in the world!  Galaxy Grocery and farm fresh organic produce and meats are super convenient to my home.

When we bought the property we were drawn to the sound of the creek, the long-distance views, the open air feel, and peaceful sounds of the country. The stars are tremendous at night because there is no street light to distort visibility. We also preferred the convenience of a smaller home to take care of while still enjoying an expansive grassy yard to play in. The first spring after we moved in we discovered hundreds of surprise flower bulbs blooming including a variety of Iris, Lillies, Daffodils, Red Roses, Gladiolas and more. The blueberry bushes yield more blueberries than one family can eat so we picked them and sold them at the Black Mountain Farmers Market in the summers.

The Old Fort area is wonderful for escaping the urban grind. Warm days and cool nights are guaranteed. In Old Fort it is easy to feel removed from the busy work-a-day life and relax into the natural peace of the valley. The commute to work and the doctor's office is very easy. Tons of song birds and hummingbirds live on the property. We see horses, deer, cows, fox, and wild turkeys on a weekly basis. Have not seen a bear yet though!

We love to kick back with friends on the patio grilling out and playing with our families in the fields and creeks on the weekends. We enjoy sharing harvests from our gardens with neighbors too. Lots of beans and maters round here! Lake Lure and Lake James are within minutes of our house so we Pontoon and camp as often as we can.    We enjoy go cart riding, remote control helicopter flying, fishing, hiking, welding and tinkering in the workshop, gardening on the property. I like to paint and play the guitar on the porch in the evenings. A beautiful waterfall is just a short hike into the cove behind the house. Neighbors host bonfires and pig roasts for Fall Frost and Summer. Our neighborhood is great for horseback riding and napping in a hammock by the creek.

Our Duke Power utility costs are extremely affordable in every season ranging from $50-180 in peak times. They even send us coupons for free light bulbs throughout the year.  We enjoy delicious well water for free! And the wood stove is amazingly efficient and keeps us toasty warm.

The thing I love about Candler is that it is close to Mount Pisgah and the Blue Ridge Parkway. I love that it is a small town but convenient to downtown Asheville.

We love to eat at the Miami, Ruth Chris and PF Chang. There is a wonderful variety of restaurants to suit any appetite. Grocery stores I love to shop at include Bi-Lo, the Farmers Market and Harris Teeter.

We love this property because we are the last home on a private dead end street with beautiful views of the mountains on our front and back porch. There is room for a garden. I love hearing the crickets at night and the nice cool breezes. I like the large yard and the newly paved road.  The Candler area is known for the hospitable people, wonderful churches and convenience to lakes, mountains and parks. The Biltmore House and Grove Park Inn are close and easy to find. Downtown Asheville is know for its artistic culture. Mission Hospital is a Trauma Center and recognized throughout the country for being a great hospital.

The school system is close with the elementary school less than one mile from the house. The teachers and parents are very involved with the children.  I love the rolling mountains, numerous parks and the French Broad river. We love the southern hospitality and down to earth people. What is nice is that you have the city of Asheville at your back door.

There are numerous outdoor activities including rock climbing, hiking, biking trails and camp grounds. The things I love about Asheville are...the beauty of the surrounding mountains, the unique and eclectic flavor of the people, the restaurants, theater, arts and  shops, the hiking and walking trails, the fresh, clean mountain air..
Our neighborhood is great for enjoying nature, nice views, walking, tennis, the pool in the summer, friendly neighbors and a community clubhouse for socializing and parties.

We love to eat at the following restaurants: Papa’s and Beer, O’Charley’s, Carraba’s, India Garden, and many, many more...too numerous to name and within just a few minutes’ drive.Grocery stores are plentiful...Ingles within 2 minutes, Green Life/Whole Foods and many others within 5 minutes...and Trader Joes is under construction...

When we bought the property we were drawn to its spaciousness, function and beautiful location, location, location!  Just minutes from downtown, the Asheville Mall, and major freeways I-40 and I 240 while still maintaining a feeling of isolation and seclusion.

The Asheville area is a wonderful and wholesome place to live with its temperate climate, four beautiful seasons, slower relaxed pace of life, it is especially great for outdoorsy and artsy folks. The school system in Asheville is first rate.  We are in the Bell elementary and Reynolds’s Middle and High School district
which are the most desired in the Buncombe county area.  We are minutes from several universities...AB Tech and UNCA are within 12 minutes...Warren Wilson is about 18 minutes and Montreat about a 20 minute drive.

This condo is has an open airy modern design with high ceilings.  It is an upscale condo at an affordable price point.  Lots of room with the potential of having the down stairs turned into a mother in law suits or a rental.

It just can’t be understated...Beautiful downtown Asheville is minutes away... just a short drive through the tunnel and prepare to see a breathtaking vista that NEVER gets old...shops, theater, music, restaurants, adult continuing ed classes at AB Tech or UNCA...the Mountain to Sea Trail for walking, hiking, running...rivers for kayaking or canoeing...the Blue Ridge Parkway for biking...are all literally minutes away.

The utility costs where much less than we expected for the size of this property.  Our gas bills ran below $100 in the wintertime as we heated the main floor and some of the upper floor with the gas furnace logs as we liked the flames and beauty of the fire place.  The electric bill ran on average $95 in the summer using the air when needed and in the $70s in the winter when gas was mainly used.  Water bill which included the Trash collection ran at $80 dollars a month with 5 occupants in the house.

Black Mountain is the perfect place to live.  It is beautiful, quaint and so convenient!  We have the benefit of being close to Asheville (10 minutes away) but yet the peace of living outside the city without all the traffic! We love to eat date night at Thai Basil, great spicy food!  The boys love to eat burgers and ribs at Phil's Bar-B-Que and Put-Put Golf.  As a family, we like to eat at the Gluten friendly Fresh Pizza! The Artisan makes a great lunch that is healthy and fast and the Morning Glory cafe is a romantic breakfast spot! We love the brand new Ingles grocery store they just built in Black Mountain!  It is the Flagship store and has a gas station, Starbucks coffee and Lawn & Garden Center!  There is a Bi-Lo across the street and also a Gourmet Grocery store located inside The Village.

We love this house for so many reasons.  It is an authentic Craftsman home with no expense spared on quality and details.  It is a Healthy Built Home so it really helps us with our allergies, and having all hand scraped wood floors is magnificent.  We really enjoy sitting around the stone fireplace and having family time or sipping coffee/wine on any of the 7 porches and patios.  This house is perfect for entertaining.  It has landscape lighting, a house sound system, and 3 fireplaces.  It has a great view and has three separate levels in which people can live!

The Asheville area is wonderful because it is the perfect balance of city mixed with nature.  We have 4 even seasons that are all relatively mild.  There are a ton of mom & pop shops while at the same time all the big box stores that you would want.  Asheville is very diverse and friendly and filled with Arts and Culture! A few other things that I can mention are that we are only a few miles away from Bill Grahams home in Montreat, the Biltmore House, and the Grove Park Inn.  We never run out of things to do or ideas of where to visit. If you are an outdoor enthusiast, there is endless hiking, biking, fishing, and kayaking all within minutes of The Village.

The Village of Cheshire is a wonderful place to visit and has a fantastic coffee and wine bar as well as a gourmet market.  We love to cook, so we get fresh meat and seafood here, once a week, and make ourselves a gourmet dinner at a fraction of the price.  There are weekly wine tastings that are a excellent way to meet the neighbors.  Also, there is a medical building across the creek that has a family doctor, dentist, physical therapist and chiropractor!

We are very active and have children in sports year round.  There are great facilities all around us to train, including an indoor soccer arena right here in Black Mountain.  Just one mile down the road is The Cheshire Fitness facility where we can lift weights, swim, take classes and play racquetball.  We are avid boaters so we visit Lake James all summer long which is only 35 minutes away!

We were attracted to Cheshire development because it's only 1/2 mile from the interstate. It has city water and sewer and ALL underground utilities including DSL and natural gas. It is the only TND (Traditional Neighborhood Development) in the area. The architecture is english craftsman and the village is adorable!  The parks, creek, restaurants and wine shop are in one neighborhood make this an amazing place to live. The views from our development are fantastic. !!!

This home is Energy Star AND Healthy Built certified so we have an incredibly efficient home.  The insulation is spray foam so the attic spaces are climatized for storage and save a ton of energy.  On top of already having an incredibly energy efficient house, because it is Energy Star certified, the owner gets a 5% discount from both Progress Energy and PSNC Gas for the life of the home.  This discount is transferable from owner to owner!
