The things I love about Fairview are the rural feeling of farms and woods, combined with the sophistication and cultural variety of nearby Asheville. You are close to all the best that Western North Carolina offers.
We loved eating at the Sugar Beet Cafe, just up the road, but it just closed. Coming soon is a similar restaurant, with healthy, delicious food featuring local ingredients, and I'm sure it will be good. Otherwise, it's a short drive to a cute pizza restaurant, Pizza and More, and a bit further down the hill to the complex of eateries and stores across from A.C. Reynolds High. The culinary wonders of downtown Asheville are only fifteen minutes away.
Out in Fairview, you're close to some of the best farms in the area, such as Hickory Nut Gap Farm and a variety of smaller, family-run outfits. Most of these local growers sell their wares at Trout Lily Market, just about a mile from our house. Here, you can find organic and healthy products at fair prices, as well as a great selection of local beers and frozen goods. Just down Highway 74 is Cape Fear Seafood, which is a family run business that features the freshest seafood in Asheville (trucked in semi-daily from the NC coast).
For mainstream shopping needs, there's a good Food Lion about two miles from the house, an Ingles just a bit further, and (our favorite) the wonderful Earth Fare in South Asheville, about fifteen minutes away.
We were immediately drawn to the private, park-like setting of the home, sitting as it does on a hill adjacent to 150 undeveloped acres of beautiful woods. The back decks are a peaceful and beautiful place to spend an afternoon, morning, or evening. We loved our friendly and helpful neighbors, most of whom have lived in the area for many years. The Fairview schools are some of the best in the county, so families are plentiful and involved in community life.
The house has so much space and room, and it is tastefully appointed and solidly built.
The Asheville area is a perfect place for those seeking cultural and intellectual depth on the verge of beautiful mountain wilderness. The rich Appalachian culture and history is supplemented by a variety of recent transplants (many from large urban centers like New York, LA, and Atlanta) who bring great new traditions with them. With a huge array of outdoor activities available year-round, it's a healthy place to raise a family, too.
Nearby is Fairview Elementary, a great neighborhood school, and Cane Creek Middle School, one of the best in the district. I actually worked at Carolina Day School, a private school about 20 minutes away, and it is a first-class K-12 school. About five minutes from the house is the beautiful and lively Fairview Library, a sunny place full of great books.
We loved sitting on the back deck watching birds fly from tree to tree. We loved the seasons and the variety they brought to the woods and mountains. We loved the Blue Ridge Parkway, just fifteen minutes away and an instant connection to the most beautiful wilderness in the East. Hickory Nut Gorge, Bearwallow Mountain, and Lake Lure are just 30 minutes in the other direction and offer even more natural beauty.
The light coming into the house from all angles is stunning. The rooms are cozy and bright, and the huge amount of storage space is something we always appreciated.
Since the house is on a cul-de-sac, there's great biking for kids in the street, and good walking up and down the Fox Ridge hill. Our favorite thing to do was to hop in the car and drive down to the Biltmore Estate for some hiking or biking. There are countless other great hikes off the Parkway or out towards Lake Lure as well.
Our neighborhood is great for gathering on back decks, walking dogs, playing in the woods, and (on rare snowy days) sledding with kids and neighbors.
The house averaged about 85 dollars a month in the warmer seasons. We rarely needed to run the a/c, as the cool evenings and open floorplan kept the house nice and comfortable. During the winter, our electric bill (including heat and electric) was never more than $250 during the coldest months. The local utility is Progress Energy, and they were very responsive in the rare event of a power outage or other difficulty.

This is a nice house with an open floor plan and lots of space! A neighbor stopped by to say hello the day I showed the home, such a great neighborhood for walking and talking! Gwen Bowers, Buyer's Agent
ReplyDeleteGreat house and floor plan. I love the back deck and wooded area of the yard.
ReplyDeleteI love the combination of the wood floors and bright mill work. Also, it is unusual to find that much undeveloped acreage (150 acres) adjacent to a property--such great habitat for turkeys and songbirds!
ReplyDeleteThe finishing in this home is very unique. The yellow brings a lot of light into the home. Wonderful floor plan as well!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fabulous home to enjoy wonderful outdoor living in Western North Carolina. This home has gorgeous high end appointments and is set up for entertaining along with a great area for quests. The yard is extremely peaceful, quiet and perfect for family pets. This home is a BIG WINNER 10 minutes to downtown Asheville!! Jane Risberg, Buyer's Agent, PPG
ReplyDeleteI love homes on cul-de-sacs. Large home with tons of natural light.
