The things I love about the Horse Shoe/Etowah area is the friendly small village atmosphere yet just minutes from Laurel Park, downtown Hendersonville and Brevard. Also we are in the best school district in Henderson County with Etowah Elementary about two miles away from our house and then Rugy Jr. High and West Henderson High all highly rated.
We have a few restaurants locally, but Hendersonville is a haven for "foodies". Everything from German at Haus Heidelberg, pub grub at Hannah Flanagan's, Cajun at Cypress Cellar and several wonderful Thai, Chinese and Japanese restaurants. For that special dinner The Seasons Restaurant at Highland Lake Inn is perfect from the exciting menu to impeccable service. We also love The Inn On Church, especially Sunday brunch on the porch.
Etowah/Horse Shoe has several banks, a pharmacy and two farmer's markets. Grocery shopping is a breeze with Ingle's Grocery Store being about 2 miles from our house or there is the Super Ingle's in Mills River, about 10 minutes. There are several great grocery stores in Hendersonville, but The Fresh Market is just that - "fresh". You can entertain without hardly lifting a finger. The Fresh Market has it all for any occasion.
The downtown shops are quaint and offer a wide variety of goods and if you spend too much time shopping, stop at Chef's Starr To Go on Kanuga Road for a take out gourmet dinner that all you have to do is pop it in the microwave.
When we bought this house we were drawn to the natural beauty of the property and the fact that it was country but still very close to conveniences. It's like living in your very own tree house.
Hendersonville is a wonderful area as it has so much to offer. The Apple Festival, Sidewalk Art Show, The Garden Jubilee, Antique Show, Holiday Festival in December just to name a few. We are famous for The Flat Rock Play House, the state theater of North Carolina with two venues one on Main Street and one in Flat Rock, plus Hendersonville Little Theater. Hendersonville is also known for its Symphony Orchestra and The Hendersonville Chorale.
With so many retirees in the community we have talent from all across the country. A few other things that make the area great is the proximity to the Blue Ridge Parkway and the National Forest with Sliding Rock, Looking Glass Falls and Dry Falls. Dupont Forest with its three water falls is perfect for hiking or picnicking, as is Holmes State Park with its "talking trees". Close to the house is the Etowah Lions Club park with tennis courts, frisbee golf, several baseball and soccer fields, and a paved walking trail. Our dog loves to go there to see all his friends - dog and human. We also have the Etowah Golf and Country Club and the Cummings Cove Golf course within minutes plus more course through out the county. Then sometimes we love just to sit on one of our decks with a book and just veg out. There really is "something for everyone". The marked bike trails are very scenic and very challenging. Spend a day at the Carl Sandburg House visiting Mrs. Sandburg's goats. Or in the summer, take the grandkids to hear the the Rutabaga stories acted out by the actors from Flat Rock Playhouse.
Our neighborhood, or "The Hill" as we call it, is comprised of just six families with plenty of space for enjoying nature. The wildlife is abundant. Plenty of birds and especially the Hummers. We have a family of red foxes that we enjoyed watching grow up plus several red-tailed hawks that nest up here and I must not forget the deer. Everyone keeps an eye out for one another with out being obtrusive; it's amazing that our garbage cans miraculously appear back in the garage after trash pickup and our walk gets shoveled after a snow. Guess you have figured out that we are the "old folks" on the hill.
We have wonderful service from Duke Power and Freeman Gas Company.
