30 Black Bear Trail, Leicester, NC 28754
There are many things we love about living in the Asheville area, especially having access to beautiful wilderness and the amenities of city life without having to ever go too far from home. We enjoy hiking in these beautiful mountains, exploring antique shops, attending craft shows, going to Drum Circle on Friday evenings, attending a variety of concerts at the US Cellular Center and Thomas Wolfe Auditorium, long drives on the Blue Ridge Parkway, spending time on the French Broad River, hiking portions of the Appalachian Trail, exploring all the interesting small towns in the surrounding area. We really like that everyone seems to have a place here no matter where they are from.
We enjoy eating out, and one of our favorite spots that is close to home is the Spring Creek Café, which is just 15 minutes away on the other side of Doggett Mountain. We also like Papa's Pizza on Leicester Highway, Sonic drive-in on Leicester Highway on Sunday evenings for a killer cheeseburger and a milkshake, Asian Wok Chinese restaurant on Leicester Highway for freshly cooked take-out or eat-in, La Carreta Mexican Restaurant on Merrimon Avenue in North Asheville, Chipotle in Asheville, Farmburger, Carraba's, Longhorne Steakhouse. We enjoy ice cream cones from Kilwin's in downtown Asheville. Even though this home is not in town, it is only 20 minutes away from gas, groceries, and hardware. About five minutes further down Leicester highway, there is an Ingles Market. We were initially drawn to what we thought was a good view, but this is truly a very special place. The house faces east, so we are greeted most mornings by a beautiful sunrise. Some mornings we are above the clouds and the mountaintops across the valley rise above the clouds and look like islands in an ocean. We also see the moon rise in the evenings, and when it is full it creates quite a show. During stormy weather, we enjoy watching the storms roll across the valley. We like lying in the hammock at night and looking at the stars, which are truly spectacular because of the lack of lights near the house. We enjoy campfires in the fire pit out front and toasting marshmallows, and sometimes we hear coyotes howling while we are sitting by the fire. On a few summer evenings each year thousands of fireflies appear along the driveway and in part of the yard. They create so much light that they light up the trees along the driveway. We enjoy getting into the hot tub, especially on cool or even cold nights, and looking at the shimmering lights all across the valley. Every summer hummingbirds return to Doggett Mountain, and we enjoy sitting on the front porch watching them chase each other. One of our favorite (and easy) hikes is along the Laurel River near Hot Springs. We enjoy doing many things, but we particularly enjoy hiking, woodworking and making crafts, cutting firewood for the winter, sewing, knitting, painting, woodburning - anything creative. We have terrific neighbors here who are now dear, dear friends. When one has a problem, someone is always ready to help in any way, and they share in your joys as well as sorrows. This is a quiet and peaceful neighborhood where you can truly enjoy all that nature has to offer, including watching a large variety of birds and other wildlife, as well as many beautiful wildflowers. We haven't had any troubles with wildlife, but we have seen deer, bears, coyotes, chipmunks, groundhogs, bobcats, squirrels, wild turkeys and many different songbirds and woodpeckers. We particularly enjoy taking walks from the house around to the pretty waterfall at the far edge of the property. In the summer months it is a cool and shady spot, and after it rains, from the house you can hear the water rushing down the mountain. Our utility costs are very reasonable because the house is very well insulated and has 2 x 6 construction. Electricity service is provided by French Broad EMC, and our average monthly bill is $130 - $150. French Broad EMC is just terrific, and the service is very dependable. We have had very few outages in the 13 years we have lived here, and they have always responded very quickly when there has been any problem. We have an underground 500-gallon liquid propane tank that is leased from Amerigas for less than $100 annually, but we haven't used much propane over the years. One of the heat pumps uses gas when it is very cold, and we have a gas range. We have heated the whole house with our Appalachian woodstove with less than two cords of wood (harvested from this property) per year for the entire time we have lived here. We have an electric water heater, but we also have a solar water heating system that provides most of our hot water and helps to heat the hot tub. The house is well situated to take advantage of heat from the sun in the wintertime. 30 Black Bear Trail, Leicester, NC 28754 Current Price and Status HERE - Search by price
